The City of Lebanon has announced more information on this year’s Fourth of July fireworks display.

In releasing the details, Lebanon Mayor Sherry Capello made a point to first thank the generous citizens who made the display possible. “First, we would like to say THANK YOU to all the businesses and community members for their generous donations to make the Fourth of July Fireworks Display possible,” said Mayor Capello in the release.

The fireworks display is set to start at “dusk” or approximately 9 pm. on Saturday, July 4. Coleman Memorial Park will be closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic beginning at 7:30 p.m. “Due to restrictions on large gatherings, there will be no ground show display and no spectator area inside the park this year,” said Capello in the release. “The fireworks will be totally an aerial display.”

City police and fire police will be present to help with traffic control and parking in the area of Coleman’s. Capello said that spectators will be able to park along all public streets, with the exception of State Route 72/Maple Street and 16th Street, which is being kept open for emergency vehicle access.

“We encourage the public to remain in their vehicles for safety purposes,” said Capello.

The mayor also requested that the public not bring sparklers or other consumer fireworks to the display on Saturday, as due to dryness in the area and an expected large number of vehicles nearby, “a fire could very easily start.”

Capello said that in addition to being dedicated to the service men and woman who defend the nation’s freedom, this year’s fireworks display is also dedicated to “healthcare heroes” who have been working long hours and in extreme conditions these past few months. “You have shown heroic efforts caring for our fellow Americans during the pandemic,” said Capello.

Capello said that if technology cooperates the city intends to live-stream the fireworks display to its Facebook page.

One last thing, for any budding pyrotechnics out there – the regulations for consumer fireworks in the City of Lebanon are outlined in section 3308.1.1 of the fire code.

Consumer fireworks are prohibited for use in Lebanon on any public right of ways or other public property, and may only be used on private property with the owner’s permission further than 15 feet from any structure, vehicle, or other fire hazard, such as a dry grass field.

Although possessing consumer fireworks won’t get you in hot water with the police, setting them off in a disallowed location will. Due to Lebanon’s geography there aren’t many residences in the city where use of fireworks would be permitted based on the fire code. As seen in LebTown’s most recent blotter, the most likely outcome for violating the ordinance will be a disorderly conduct charge. With questions about the use of personal fireworks, reach the Lebanon City Police at (717) 272-6611.
