Nighttime Route 72, Route 322 detours to shift nightly next week in Cornwall area

Motorists in the Cornwall area face a different overnight detour nearly every night next week as crews mill and pave on the Route 72 (Quentin Road) and Route 322 resurfacing project, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said Thursday.

The detours will be in place from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night Sunday through Thursday, weather permitting. Only one detour will be in place at a time, PennDOT said.

The work affects North Cornwall and West Cornwall townships and Cornwall Borough.

Sunday night, Aug. 30

Eastbound Route 322 will close from the eastbound/westbound Route 322 split to the intersection with Route 72, with a detour using northbound Route 419 to southbound Route 72 to eastbound Route 322.

Eastbound Route 322 will also close from the eastbound Route 322/Route 72 split to the area where eastbound and westbound Route 322 converge, with a detour using northbound Route 419 to southbound Route 501 to Route 322.

Monday night, Aug. 31

Eastbound Route 322 will close from the eastbound Route 322/Route 72 split to the area where eastbound and westbound Route 322 converge, with a detour using northbound Route 419 to southbound Route 501 to Route 322.

Westbound Route 322 will close from the eastbound/westbound Route 322 split to the northbound Route 72 intersection, with a detour using northbound Route 501 to southbound Route 419 to westbound Route 322.

The westbound Route 322 ramp to southbound Route 72 will close, with a detour using northbound Route 72/westbound Route 322 to the ramp to Route 117, then northbound Route 117 to the ramp to southbound Route 72.

Tuesday night, Sept. 1

Northbound Route 72 will close from the Spring Hill Acres entrance at Spring Hill Lane to the area where northbound Route 72 and westbound Route 322 converge, with a detour using westbound Cider Press Road, northbound Pinch Road and southbound Route 117 to northbound Route 72.

The westbound Route 322 ramp to southbound Route 72 will close again, using the same Route 117 detour as Monday night.

Wednesday night, Sept. 2

Westbound Route 322 will close from the eastbound/westbound Route 322 split to the northbound Route 72 intersection, with a detour using northbound Route 501 to southbound Route 419 to westbound Route 322.

Thursday night, Sept. 3

Southbound Route 72 will close from the northbound/southbound Route 72 split just south of Alden Lane to the intersection with eastbound Route 322, with a detour using southbound Route 419 to eastbound Route 322 to southbound Route 72.

The schedule is weather dependent and may be rescheduled, PennDOT said.

The project includes base replacement, milling, guiderail updates, drainage replacements, sign and overhead signing replacement, pavement marking updates and other work on Route 72 from the Lancaster County line to Rocherty Road in North Cornwall Township, and on Route 322 just north and south of the section where it runs concurrently with Route 72 as a four-lane divided highway.

Most of the work is being done at night, though some daytime work is possible. Single-lane restrictions and additional overnight ramp and roadway closures are expected within the project limits, and PennDOT said it will issue updated releases before any new detours take effect.

Pennsy Supply Company Inc. of Harrisburg is the contractor on the $7,009,000 project. All work is expected to be completed by Dec. 3.
