A city man is facing a string of felony and misdemeanor charges after police say he approached Lebanon Intermediate School with a knife and a taser Monday morning while students were entering the building.
Lebanon City Police and Lebanon School District Police responded to a disturbance in the 300 block of North Eighth Street at about 7:50 a.m., according to a release from city police.
Jose Padilla-Santiago, 32, arrived at the school brandishing the weapons and yelling at school officials who were outside as students arrived, police said. As those officials tried to de-escalate the situation, a district police officer engaged Padilla-Santiago and kept him from advancing toward students or staff, according to the release.
City officers responded to calls for assistance and helped take Padilla-Santiago into custody without further incident, police said. No students were harmed.
Padilla-Santiago has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of weapons on school property, possession of an instrument of crime, and prohibited offensive weapons.
Police did not say whether Padilla-Santiago has any connection to the school or its students, and no possible motive was released. As of publication charges have yet to be filed in the state’s Unified Judicial System.
