During the full month of June, Boy Scouts of America and food security nonprofit Power Packs Project are uniting to present virtual 5K and 15K races in an event called “Scout On!”

All from the Boy Scout community, including scouts from other councils and those who are not involved in scouting, are invited to partake in the virtual race. All proceeds from the event will be directed to Power Packs Project and the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America.

Power Packs Project’s mission is to help provide low-cost, healthy meals to low-income families with children. The nonprofit has over 500 volunteers and serves over 1,600 families within Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

“Due to COVID-19, we chose to make this a virtual race to ensure the safety of all who participate,” Nicole Welch, Horseshoe Trail District Executive, said. The Horseshoe Trail District covers the following school districts: Annville-Cleona, Cocalico, Cornwall-Lebanon, Eastern Lebanon County, Ephrata, Lebanon, Northern Lebanon County, Palmyra, and Warwick.

For the 5K, it is recommended participants run or walk on a road, trail, treadmill, or track. The 15K race is recommended to be biked on a road, trail, or on a stationary bike.

Participants can choose any location to complete the race, and social distancing is suggested for all. There are participants registered from eight different states already and at least one participant from another country.

“This is our first race our Council is hosting, and as scouts, we wanted to give back to the community,” Welch said. “We chose to reach out to Power Packs Project to collaborate on the race because they work with children and families throughout our Council, providing food for those who need it most. They, like us, work year-round to improve the lives of children and families.”

Registration for the race is $13 per person. Registration and completion of the race are required to be done by June 30. Each participant will be sent a bib via email with an assigned number to print at home and wear while racing.

Once participants finish the race, they are asked to post a picture of themselves on Facebook. Race patches will be sent to all participants in the mail by the end of August.
