“Introduction to Hymn Singing” Workshop

St. Luke’s will offer a free hymn singing workshop from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning Nov. 28.

The workshop is designed to teach the basics of reading and singing hymns. The classes are geared especially for beginners who may have many questions about how to sing hymns: What are notes? What do they tell us to do? How does one know when to sing faster or slower? What is rhythm? How does one know where the words go? Why do we choose the hymns that we choose? Is there an appropriate time to sing louder or softer?

Materials will be provided, and participants do not need to be members of the church. Jason Yannuzzi, choirmaster of St. Luke’s, will lead the classes. The workshop is designed for adults and teens, but older elementary children may participate with an adult. Registration is required; click here or call the church at 717-272-8251.

Evensong and Concert Series

Evensong is a completely sung Vespers service preserved through the centuries in English cathedrals and college chapels. A vast amount of literature was written for this service, which lasts just under an hour. “Solemn” Evensong is an intimate, sung prayer service lead by the choir and organ and includes simple canticles, anthems, hymns, and preaching. Traditional Anglo-Catholic elements of worship, such as incense, are included. St. Luke’s is the only church in this area outside of major cities (Philadelphia, New York, Washington) to sing regular Evensong. The next of these services to be held at St. Luke’s will be a Solemn Evensong for Advent, in the auditorium of the church at 6 p.m. on Sunday, December 17.

To further expand their musical offerings, St. Luke’s hosts many artists from throughout Pennsylvania and beyond in their annual concert series. Most of these events are free, and all are open to the public. The next event in this series will be a holiday singalong by the musical group One A-Chord on Saturday, December 9, at 6 p.m.
