Editor’s Note: Last year, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!

Welcome to the third season of our highly anticipated Lebanon Valley “Wing Wars.” Four entrants from across the Valley will compete, bracket style, to be declared the winner of Best Wing in The Valley.

(In case you missed it, the winner of Season One was the Red-Headed League, which has since closed, and the winner of Season Two was the Gin Mill.)

Our judgement will be based upon several factors including: wing sauce/rub flavor, size of wing, how they’re cooked, presentation, and critic impression.

Our second stop is in downtown Lebanon. Located along S. 8th St. on the first floor of the Lebanon Farmer’s Market is longtime local favorite Keener Poultry.

This stand has a hot counter for ready to eat poultry, including several wing varieties.

Today, we ordered a mix of the four wing styles they had available: mild, spicy, BBQ, and garlic parm. The wings are sold by the pound ($14.95) and can be ordered in any quantity. Flavors will be bagged separately.

The wings are a nice, large size. The flats have more of a crunch than the drums. The chicken is meaty, generously rubbed, and lightly sauced. Coming from the serving bar, they are mildly warm. We threw ours in the oven at home before we ate them.

The menu shows up several flavor options, but you can only choose from what is made that day. The rubs and sauces taste like they are cooked into the wing. The spicy rub had an enjoyable taste with a late kick of the spicy rub.

Our final impression:

  • Crispy flats and overall large wings.
  • Options vary from day to day.
  • The sauces and rubs are cooked into the wing.
  • From the counter, they are served warm.

We will now head over to our other entrants: The Franklin House and Cocktails Kitchen + Bar. After which we will announce the winner.
