Turn around, don’t drown.
That’s the message from local authorities today as heavy rains cause flooding in parts of Lebanon County for another time this summer. Reports of 2″ to 4″ of rain were seen from northern parts of the county.
The National Weather Services has issued a flood warning through 5:30pm, with special alerts for Schaefferstown, Kleinfeltersville, Newmanstown and Richland.
Multiple area schools have cancelled football games tonight due to the weather.
The hilly terrain of northern Lebanon County makes it especially rife with dangerous low water crossings.
County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz posted on Facebook Live from the waterworks and reported that the Swatara Creek was “just ready to overflow the bank” with near-flood levels caused by the heavy rains earlier today.
An alert from the National Weather Service said that the creek is forecast to rise above flood stage by late this afternoon and crest near 9.3 feet by this evening. The creek will fall below flood stage by tonight.
