Historic Schaefferstown is set for a busy weekend with two events designed to evoke the spirit of the Pennsylvania German culture indigenous to the region.

The Tavern Lunch at the Gemberling-Rex house will be held on Saturday with five full-service seating of an hour each. The first seating is 10:00am and the last is 2:00pm.

The historic 18th-century tavern building has been owned by Historic Schaefferstown since 1987. Architectural highlights include metal fixtures, period-authentic wall paint, and portions still-intact of a full barkeepers cage that used to protect the innkeeper and his libations.

Reservations are required for the Tavern Lunch. Please call 717-949-2244. The cost is $14 per person. As for food, expect a soup or stew as well as “victuals of the period.”

While the Tavern Lunch is happening, across the street in the basement of the Brendle Museum will be a Christkindlmarkt featuring artisan goods and crafts perfect for gifts. The Christkindlmarkt opens at 9:00am Saturday and runs until 3:00pm.

What Central PA’er wouldn’t love a pretzel mug?
