The prescribed burn season at Fort Indiantown Gap begins today and will last through the first week of May.
The first burn will occur today and total 82 acres.
The burns will be conducted on approximately 4,500 acres. Gap officials says local residents may notice smoke originating from or in the vicinity of the installation while burns are being conducted.
The prescribed burns will be conducted by forestry staff through the hours of 8am and 11pm.
Prescribed burns are performed in conjunction with the appropriate state authorities and under specific humidity, wind, and temperature conditions as a way to reduce the amount of combustible material naturally existing in the wilderness.
The Gap is the nation’s largest National Guard training center.
