Following the injury of Lebanon City Fire Department firefighter Dave Smiley Jr while combating a house fire in Mill Creek, DE, local firefighters are continuing to fundraise for his recovery.

At the time of the injury, Smiley had been volunteering his off-duty time at Minquas Fire Company in Newport, DE, where he is a live-in member and Rescue Captain. Now his colleagues in the local firefighters union is raising more money to support his recovery.

“Dave Smiley was hired as a career firefighter in Lebanon back in December,” explained Lebanon Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 1952 president Jan Harnish. “In those few short months he has made a huge impact on his co-workers through his compassion and work ethic. Dave is the type of aggressive fireman you want showing up when you have a problem.”

The Local 1952 currently has two fundraisers ongoing for Smiley.

2″ reflective stickers are being sold for $5 and t-shirts for $15, both items being available for purchase at City Fire Station #1 (700 South 8th Street). All proceeds will benefit Smiley’s recovery efforts.

According to the release, Smiley was discharged at the end of March following two weeks at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. He is currently attending physical therapy four days each week and working to regain strength in his hands and ankles. He is still healing from 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

“Firemen are a special breed and we are fortunate to have Smiley as a co-worker,” said Harnish.
