The Quittapahilla Audubon Society has announced its lineup of spring programs and outings.
Friday, April 7
Take a walk on the Lebanon Valley College campus and explore habitats that attract a variety of birds throughout the year. Meet in the Arnold Sports Center parking lot at 8 a.m. Led by Rita Stima (717-269-1159).
Saturday, April 22
Celebrate Earth Day with a spring wildflowers walk at Furnace Hills. Meet in the southeast corner of the Lebanon Target parking lot at 8:30 a.m. The group will then head to the lot of the old Lebanon pumping station on Route 322. Led by Jim Logan (717-273-8438).
Wednesday, April 26
Join the Quittapahilla Audubon for its free monthly all-ages program by Bracken Brown on “The Movement Ecology of Turkey Vultures In North America.” Bracken, who grew up next to Hawk Mountain, now works at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary where he studies turkey vultures, among other research activities. The program starts at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Saturday, April 29
Join Audubon members for a “warbler walk” to identify these migrating birds. Meet at 7:30 a.m. on Rexmont Road at the Old Rexmont Dam parking lot, just past from the white corral fencing. Led by Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
Tuesday, May 2
A second warbler walk will be held at State Game Lands 156. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Miners Village ballfield. Led by Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
Wednesday, May 3
A third warbler walk will be held at State Game Lands 145 in Colebrook. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at the white barn off Epler Road. Led by Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
Thursday, May 4
A fourth warbler walk will be held at State Game Lands 211in Cold Springs and Stony Valley. Meet at 8 a.m. at Moonshine Church along Route 443. Led by Jim Fiorentino (717-269-0675).
Saturday, May 6
Field trip to Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area to observe migrating songbirds. Meet at 8 a.m. in the Visitors Center parking lot. Led by Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487).
Tuesday, May 9
Walk the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail in Jonestown to observe local flora and fauna. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Jonestown trailhead. Led by Fritz Heilman (717-273-0487).
Tuesday, May 23
Join the Quittapahilla Audubon Society for its 37th annual banquet at Hebron Banquet Hall. Dr. Joan Maloof will give a talk on “The Healthiest Forest: What Science Says About Old Growth and Why It Matters For Birds.” $25 reservation fee includes roast beef/roast turkey buffet dinner service at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are required through the form in the society’s spring newsletter (PDF).
