A sea of flags now flank the Palmyra Area School District offices, each one representing a local hero, thanks to a new initiative by the Rotary Club of Palmyra.
Building upon a 65-year tradition of displaying scores of American flags throughout Palmyra on major holidays, the Rotary Club launched its Flags for Heroes program. This initiative allows family members and friends to sponsor a flag and a medallion to publicly honor a hero of their choice.
The campaign officially kicked off last week with a dedication ceremony on May 25, 2023. Speakers included club members and representatives from local police and fire departments.
The flags, measuring 3 feet by 5 feet, and a medallion wall will be displayed for two key patriotic holidays: in May for Memorial Day and in November for Veterans’ Day.
Sponsors of the program have their hero’s bio posted online, with tributes also shared on the Palmyra Rotary Facebook page. Each flag sponsorship costs $65.
Proceeds from this program support Rotary service projects both locally and internationally.
The Palmyra PA Rotary Club holds its meetings every Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the pavilion behind the Palmyra Community Pool. For more information about the Flags for Heroes program, visit the organization’s website.
