Nobody like the delays and detours caused by street repaving projects, especially those that take years to complete. Once one stretch is fixed, another headache seems to pop up across town like a giant game of commuter whack-a-mole.

The City of Lebanon has been in the midst of an years-long effort to repave its busiest streets since 2019, and this summer is once again seeing a surge in motorist frustration with the third of four phases underway.

Phase I, covering Walnut Street (Route 422 East) from 12th Street to 5th Avenue, and Phase II, 10th Street (Route 72 South) from Coleman Park south to Poplar Street, were completed in 2021 and 2022.

This week, the city released the following schedule of Phase III, 9th Street (Route 72 North) repaving, which will be done between July 13 and 30, from Colebrook Road to Maple Street. Dates are approximate, depending on weather and other factors:

  • July 13 through 18 – milling to remove the old surface.
  • July 19 through 24 – installation of base coat and re-laying of sensors for traffic lights.
  • July 29 through 28 – laying of finish coat and line painting.
  • July 31 – anticipated completion.

The city is reminding drivers not to attempt to bypass work crews by taking a shortcut to another part of the work zone, to follow signs, look out for temporarily protruding manhole covers, and to obey directions from flaggers.

Oversized loads on 9th Street/72 North will not be allowed during the duration of the work.
