Safety tips for solar eclipse – On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America from the Southwest to the Northeast. Most of Pennsylvania lies within the 90 percent coverage range, so there will be excellent viewing across the state, weather permitting, even outside the path of totality. Here are NASA’s dos and don’ts for viewing the eclipse:

  • Do not look directly at the sun.
  • Do not use homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark sunglasses.
  • Do use special solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers, to view the eclipse.
  • Do inspect your solar filter before use. If it is scratched or damaged, discard the filter.
  • Do read and follow filter instructions and supervise children.
  • In any stage of the eclipse, do not look at the sun through a camera, binoculars, telescope, or any other optical device, and never use solar filters with these devices, as concentrated solar rays will damage them and can cause serious eye injuries.
  • Pinhole projection is a safe way to view the sun in an indirect fashion. Exploratorium provides instruction on “How to Build a Sun Viewer” and other methods of safely viewing the sun.

Rental and real estate scam warning – Lebanon city police have been receiving an increased number of fraud complaints, with the most recent being from citizens looking for apartments. Potential renters have been asked by the scammer to send money via Cash App for application fees, deposits to secure the property, cleaning fees, and agent fees before being permitted to view the property. The victims learn too late that this is a scam and never get to see the property after playing phone tag with the scammer or showing up at the property, only to learn that it’s owned by someone else or was never available for rent. Please use caution when answering ads for apartments for rent via Facebook. It is always best practice to go through a trusted property management group and not send money via Cash App or by other means during the rental process.
