Registration opens on May 28 for the yearly Grasslands and Butterfly Tour at Fort Indiantown Gap where, among other interesting sights, participants can see the last remaining population of the eastern regal fritillary butterfly.

Tours will be held on July 4, 5, 6, and 7. Available tour departure times will be listed on the permits.

Although the permits are free, preregistration is required through a two-step process through an iSportsman account, and permits will only be available to people who first watch the โ€œGrassland and Butterfly Tour Safety Brief Videoโ€ and complete the validation process for all participants, including children.

The number of permits is limited.

According to a press release, the focus of the guided tours is the regal fritillary butterfly, its habitat and ecology, but staff will also draw attention to other insects, birds, reptiles, and native plants in the area. They also will explain how the military presence on the base is vital to the persistence of these species and their ecosystems.

Tours will be held rain or shine. According to the release, permit holders will be given instructions on where to park and must wait in their vehicles until a staff member checks them in.

After a guided convoy to the grassland habitat, participants will be taken on a guided walking tour over mowed grassland trails and gravel roads. Tours typically last about an hour.
