Two local comic-book retailers are participating in Free Comic Book Day 2024 by – you guessed it – handing out free comic books on Saturday, May 4.
Ralph Watts, owner of Comics & Paperbacks Plus at 201 E. Main St., Palmyra, told LebTown that the annual event will run at his store from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
“I received in 27 different titles this year to be given away,” Watts said in an email. “I always have available the Gold Sponsored titles listed on www.Freecomicbookday.com and then others I think will appeal to MOST readers.”
This year, Watts said the store will host returning Pennsylvania artist Chris Ring with his newest graphic novel featuring Allan Quatermain, as well as superhero prints and original artwork for sale.
Weather permitting, Watts noted, Ghostbusters wearing their iconic gear and the Ghostbuster mobile will be out front, and patrons can get their pictures taken “for a small donation to whatever charity they are helping this year.”
Comics & Paperbacks Plus has been participating in Free Comic Book Day since 2001. While supplies last, Watts said, everyone who comes into the store can choose three books out of the 27-plus titles available. Providing an email address to the store nets patrons an additional three books, he said, and wearing a costume gets another three.
“We have had as many as 500 people in 4 hours,” he said, although in recent years that number has fallen to between 200 and 300.
AA Comics & Cards at 610 Cumberland St., Lebanon, is also participating in the annual event.
