As part of a field trip to Fort Indiantown Gap military training facility on April 25, students from Cornwall-Lebanon School District had the opportunity to learn about military career opportunities.

The field trip was organized by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region as part of the organization’s High School Bigs Leadership program. The base invited students from the program as part of Bring Your Kid to Work Day.

The field trip gave students an opportunity to explore what a future career with the military could look like. As a part of the program, students toured the base by bus, visited the range training areas and natural disaster preparation zone, and experienced cadet training with the help of state-of-the-art driver simulation technology.

The trip included a close-up view of official Army National Guard transportation vehicles as well as FTIG’s static helicopter display. Students were also able to learn about the day-to-day maintenance of the base as well as its lesser-known operations.

“I immediately knew this was a fantastic opportunity for our kids to see all the amazing work our military does, right here in our own county,” Deborah Hornick, regional director of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Lebanon and Lancaster counties, said in a press release.

“We are deeply grateful to Fort Indiantown Gap for warmly welcoming our students and granting them the special opportunity to actively explore what this local military career has to offer,” she said.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering as a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor should contact Hornick at dhornick@capbigs.org or visit CAPBIGS.ORG for more information.
