This month, the South Londonderry Township Board of Supervisors held a brief meeting during which it canceled the Lawn Fire Company loan.

By a vote of two ayes and an abstention from vice chairman Jack Custer, supervisors approved Resolution 12-2024, which canceled the fire engine loan for Lawn Fire Company that had been discussed previously this year.

In February 2021, supervisors passed a resolution to enter into a loan agreement of $539,306 with Lawn to assist with the company’s fire engine replacement. When similar loan requests were made by Campbelltown Fire Company, the township began to investigate other ways to support both fire companies in their replacement of equipment in a more long-term manner.

Supervisors will continue to discuss the details of the proposed fire tax. The board is concerned about raising enough money for larger replacements, but not overcharging residents during periods where less money is needed.

In the meantime, the board decided to transfer money from the general fund to assist both fire companies with their fire engine replacements. This temporary solution keeps the township’s actions with each fire company consistent.

One visitor commented that canceling the loan would hurt the fire company down the line. Chairwoman Faith Bucks replied that discussions of a fire tax will continue in order to assist the fire companies in the township.

As the township works on the budget for 2025, more information will be provided about the fire tax.

Supervisors also unanimously passed three motions to approve the Minimum Municipal Obligation contributions for police, non-uniform and non-uniform defined pension plans. The amounts for the plans are $129.022.87 for police, $91,000 for non-uniform and $29,710.75 for non-uniform defined.

John Eberly, South Londonderry Township manager, was named chief administrative officer for all three plans.

In other news, supervisors unanimously approved motions to approve:

  • The financial security reduction for the Hinkle Road RV storage.
  • A Lawn baseball field reservation agreement with Palmyra Civic Baseball Association.
  • The Sticks and Biscuits 5K. The race will take place on Thursday, Nov. 28, in Palmyra.
  • Authorization to advertise to sell four pieces of highway equipment.
  • The 2025 meeting schedule.
  • The August meeting minutes, township bills and payroll.

Supervisors also discussed the following topics:

  • The Mount Gretna snow plowing contract renewal was tabled until next month.
  • Eberly reported that the 2024 road painting project was complete.
  • Trick or treat will be Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The South Londonderry Township Board of Supervisors meets at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings are held in the municipal building at 27 W. Market St. and are open to the public. Next month’s meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
