Union Township supervisors unanimously approved the placement of two school bus stop signs near the intersection of Colonial and Plymouth drives during its Oct. 9 meeting to try to slow drivers coming up on a three-way stop sign.
Township manager Brent McFeaters said many drivers “blow through” the stop sign at the top of the hill on Plymouth Drive — which is also near a bus stop for students — because they come up to it very quickly.
Parent complaints led to increased police presence in the area, but according to Cleona chief of police Jeffrey Farneski, it still hasn’t fixed the issue.
“There is a problem,” he said. “I remember I got one that went right through and didn’t even touch the brakes.”
Farneski said the area is “a bad spot.”
The streets’ speed limits are 25 mph, and McFeaters said drivers are speeding and failing to stop, creating a dangerous environment.
“Hopefully putting those signs up would bring some more attention to actually stopping to make that happen,” he said. “We just need to bring attention to it. I don’t want any kids to get killed.”
McFeaters said each sign requires three parts — the sign itself, the metal post and an additional 2-foot post that is driven into the ground. If the pole gets hit by a car or is otherwise damaged, the pole can be pulled out and replaced with a new sign without replacing the bottom part.
He said each sign and its installation would cost about $250, which is a total of $500 for the project.
In other business, supervisors unanimously approved:
- Police services contract amounts for the next three years, using the Cleona Borough Police Department. Contracts are $148,950.36 for 2025, $154,908.37 for 2026, and $161,104.71 for 2027. According to township solicitor Paul Bametzreider, the resolution won’t lock the borough in for the next three years — each year will still require a renewal vote.
- The 2025 workers’ compensation and employers’ liability insurance policy for $9,136. McFeaters said last year cost about $8,800, and there weren’t any claims.
Union Township Board of Supervisors will have its next regular monthly meeting at 3111 PA-72 on Nov. 13 following the 6:30 p.m. sewer meeting.
