Oh boy, this school year is starting out rough for the critic crew. We have been busy, and the sick bug keeps bouncing around the house.

But during a brief period, we were able to meet up for a midweek lunch. We have received several recommendations from our followers, including Katie and Randy, to check out a small Puerto Rican joint on the city’s northside.

Located on Jonestown Road, just north of 12th Street, is Sabor Criollo “La Casa Del Mofongo.” This restaurant does take out service for lunch and early dinner with a hot counter service of homemade Puerto Rican dishes.

For our lunch today we chose two meals. The first was chicken on a stick, with rice and beans, and a beef and mofongo empanada. The second meal was a beef stew, with rice and beans, as well as a beef and cheese empanada.

The chicken comes fried on a skewer with a plentiful portion of yellow rice and beans. The seasoning makes this very flavorful. The empanada was filled with flavorful beef and had a flakey crust.

The beef stew comes with hearty chunks of beef and a savory broth. The critics were split on whether it was too salty. The beef was fully tender and juicy. The fresh veggies accompanied this dish well.

Our take: This place has a varied selection of homemade Puerto Rican food. You can order single items or a meal combo. Selections aren’t labeled so it may appear confusing to a first-time visitor. The food is rich in spices and flavor.

We give this place 🥓🥓🥓🥓.
