WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, along with several other WellSpan Health facilities, received 61 distinctions for “excellence in specialty care,” according to Healthgrades, a leading resource consumers use to find hospitals and doctors.

Six of WellSpan’s acute care hospitals were honored with distinctions in stroke, cardiac, and critical care, among others, in addition to five-star distinctions for specific treatment issues.

“At WellSpan, our dedication to superior care and excellence is what sets us apart,” Dr. Michael Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer at WellSpan Health, said in a press release. “We’re proud to have several of our specialty care units recognized. This achievement is a testament to the relentless efforts of our providers and staff who consistently prioritize our patients.”

According to the release, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital received recognition in the following categories:

  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care for 3 Years in a Row (2023-2025).
  • #4 in PA for Critical Care.
  • 2025 Critical Care Excellence Award for 3 Years in a Row (2023-2025).
  • Five-Star Distinctions in Treatment of Bowel Obstruction (2024-2025), Treatment of GI Bleed (2024-2025), Treatment of Heart Attack (2022-2025), Treatment of Heart Failure (2023-2025), Treatment of Stroke, Treatment of Pneumonia (2024-2025), Treatment of Respiratory Failure (2023-2025), Treatment of Sepsis (2022-2025) and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeries (2024-2025).
  • Named Among the Top 5% in the Nation for Critical Care for 3 Years in a Row (2023-2025).

Besides Good Samaritan, hospitals in the WellSpan network that were recognized by Healthgrades were WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital, WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, and WellSpan York Hospital.

As part of its 2025 hospital assessment, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for over 30 of the most common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine the top performers in specialty care, the press release explained.

Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades, said the agency “commends WellSpan Health for their clear commitment to delivering consistently superior patient outcomes in critical service areas, including cardiac and stroke care. WellSpan Health’s leadership, expertise, and unwavering dedication to clinical excellence set a high mark for specialty care in Pennsylvania and nationwide.”

According to Healthgrades’ 2025 analysis of its findings, 224,958 lives could potentially have been saved and 141,692 complications could potentially have been avoided “if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to five-star hospitals during the 2021-2023 study period, on average.”

Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2021 through 2023 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.
