The Pennsylvania Senate unanimously confirmed Brig. Gen. John R. Pippy on Monday as the state’s 55th Adjutant General, placing him at the helm of Fort Indiantown Gap and the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
Pippy, a West Point graduate and western Pennsylvania native, will oversee operations at Fort Indiantown Gap, the National Guard’s busiest training site east of the Mississippi River and Lebanon County’s largest employer.
In his new role, Pippy will command more than 17,000 service members, including approximately 13,000 soldiers and 4,100 airmen in the Pennsylvania National Guard.
“I am humbled and truly honored to serve as the 55th Adjutant General of Pennsylvania,” Pippy said in a statement following his confirmation.
The new adjutant general brings extensive military experience, including previous Pennsylvania National Guard service as Director of Joint Staff and Land Component Commander. His combat experience includes deployments to Iraq and the Middle East.
Gov. Josh Shapiro, who nominated Pippy for the position, praised the general’s readiness to lead, citing his commitment to supporting service members, veterans, and their families across the Commonwealth.
“Brigadier General Pippy has the experience and readiness to lead on day one — and I look forward to working with him and the men and women of the PA National Guard and the DMVA to continue delivering for all Pennsylvanians,” said Gov. Shapiro in a statement.
Pippy succeeds Maj. Gen. Mark Schindler in overseeing the state’s six veterans’ homes and numerous military installations, while managing an annual budget that supports Pennsylvania’s military and veterans’ programs.
