When you are an organization like Community Homes of Lebanon County, with just under 300 occupied residences, all requiring personal attention, it’s always something.

One example: An elderly resident is confused when his bathtub overflows. Rather than turning the water off immediately, he uses a broom to move the water from the floor and direct it to the entrance door. Solving his problem involves Community Homes staff and follow-up assistance from the Area Agency on Aging, providing education to minimize the recurrence of the problem—teamwork in action.

As an organization that provides housing, Community Homes is not required to help residents beyond shelter, but it is in our DNA to not ignore residents who look to us for help when we can.

As such, we keep up with available resources if needed. They all have “rules” to follow. Sometimes, we need to negotiate for help if we believe a resident requires assistance.

In Pennsylvania, this could mean interacting with organizations like the Department of Human Services (DHS), programs like Medicaid, Pharmaceutical Assistance, and the Pennsylvania Link to Aging and Disability Services.

Situations may also involve Senior Centers, Home Help, and 211, a nationwide resource for crisis assistance. Community Homes stay aware of these resources. You never know when a resident may need help.
