Volunteers are again being sought for the annual clean up of the iconic, 200-million-year-old Dinosaur Rock on State Game Lands 145.

The Lebanon Valley Conservancy, in conjunction with the state Game Commission, has organized a cleaning effort for Saturday, July 12, beginning at 9 a.m.

To participate, just show up at the parking area on Mount Wilson Road, sign a release form, and get to work. Interested individuals can contact Pat Krebs at patkrebs43@gmail.com to volunteer or ask any questions.

Officials will provide safety equipment such as gloves, suits, and eye protection, as well as cleaning materials including water sources and Elephant Snot, a proprietary solution for removing graffiti from porous surfaces. The formula is super effective for removing graffiti and retails at about $100 per gallon.

Although Game Commission officials have stepped up enforcement efforts to discourage graffiti on the 15-foot-tall diabase formation, known as Dinosaur Rock since at least the 1950s, the issue tends to resurge in fall and winter. Hunting season draws the commission’s four wardens serving Dauphin, Lebanon, and northern Lancaster counties to other enforcement activities, and cameras installed seasonally at Dinosaur Rock are redeployed for other investigations.

Anyone who observes vandalism occurring at Dinosaur Rock or other game lands should call commission hotlines at 1-833-PGC-HUNT or 1-833-PGC-WILD. Game commission officials discourage any members of the public from attempting to intervene directly. PGC has wardens on-call 24/7, in addition to regular officer duty hours.

Dinosaur Rock dates back to the early Jurassic period when it formed as a molten injection, cutting through the Triassic sedimentary rocks that were there at the time. Those rocks have long been eroded away, but they left behind the diabase formation, which now stands about 15 feet off the forest floor.
