The United Christian Church of Newmanstown is about to reopen after a $100,000 renovation project.

The church, whose congregation dates back to 1914, is also rebranding with a new name: New Life Fellowship.

According to a press release from Associate Pastor Bob Kettering, the congregation “has experienced many periods of spiritual renewal and growth” since the church first opened its doors 111 years ago.

In 1952, the release says, the current church building was constructed at Memorial Boulevard and South Sheridan Street but, after a period of decline, the church began renting its facility to a Hispanic congregation, Iglesia Christiana Renuevo de Vida (Renewal of Life Church), for Sunday afternoon services.

The decision was made earlier this year to undertake a revitalization effort, the release says. The United Christian denomination committed about $100,000 to renovate the church sanctuary and overflow area, with work beginning in October.

During renovations, the congregation worshipped at Millcreek Community Church.

Renovations include a new outdoor church sign, new flooring, painting, a newly expanded gathering area with a kitchenette, an expanded platform, new HVAC, lighting and electrical work, a sound room with a new sound system, a church office and a handicap restroom.

An opening Celebration Sunday for the revitalized church will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7. New Life Fellowship worship will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday school will be at 10:15 a.m., with classes for children and youth in English and adult classes in English and Spanish. Iglesia Christiana Renuevo de Vida will hold a worship service at 11:15 a.m.
