Mount Gretna Borough Council discussed plans to honor the borough’s upcoming 100th anniversary at its Feb. 9 meeting.

The borough was officially established on Oct. 7, 1926.

Council president Deb Simpson suggested purchasing signs to be posted at indoor and outdoor locations acknowledging the milestone. She also broached the idea of planning a public gathering in October featuring a presentation by the historical society.

Council members also voted to approve the temporary road closure of Pennsylvania Avenue, between Gettysburg and Carnegie avenues, for the Mount Gretna Summer Kickoff on Saturday, May 23. Cheryl Burke, representing the Mount Gretna Arts Council, presented the request during public comment.

The closure will allow space for the Gretna Fire Company Rescue Truck, bystander CPR lessons, and potentially food trucks. A planning meeting for the Summer Kickoff will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, in the Gretna Theatre offices. Anyone interested in helping to plan the event is welcome to attend.

  • Solicitor Keith Kilgore said the borough received a right-to-know request regarding condemned buildings. “To my knowledge we’ve never had a condemned building,” said Kilgore.
  • Council member and Pennsylvania Chautauqua liaison Allan Feldman said the Chautauqua received a gift of $200,000 to be used for stewarding Chautauqua lands, which covers approximately 22.5 acres. “We’re eligible to spend the interest or earnings on that money, which is estimated to be about $8,000 a year,” Feldman said.

Mount Gretna Borough Council will hold its next meeting at 6 p.m. on March 9 in the firehall on Boulevard Avenue.
