William Penn: Pennsylvania’s Founder at Cornwall Iron Furnace

Free | 1:30-2 p.m., Sunday, March 1 | 94 Rexmont Road, Cornwall

“William Penn: Pennsylvania’s Founder” is a free mini-lecture by Lydia Jones.

Get ready to celebrate Pennsylvania’s birthday with this engaging mini-lecture on the state’s founder, William Penn. On March 8, 1681, King Charles II granted Penn the royal charter that established the colony of Pennsylvania and gave him the authority to govern it. Beyond exploring Penn’s vision for his “holy experiment,” this presentation will also shine a light on the important roles played by his two wives, Gulielma and Hannah. These remarkable women managed the family estate, supported the family’s business affairs, practiced medicine, and assisted their husband in the governance of Pennsylvania, making their own lasting contributions to the colony’s success.

Our presenter, Lydia Jones, serves as the museum educator at Cornwall Iron Furnace. She previously held positions at the State Museum of Pennsylvania and the Ephrata Cloister, where she developed a strong background in public history and interpretation. Lydia earned her bachelor’s degree in archaeology and history from Lycoming College and holds a master’s degree in American studies from Penn State University.

Join us at Cornwall Iron Furnace on Sunday afternoons this March for more bite-sized history lessons on a variety of engaging topics. These mini-lectures are condensed versions of our popular monthly educational programs and are presented in the Museum Visitor Center by knowledgeable local historians. This short-and-sweet format offers an accessible introduction to the fascinating influence of our industrial heritage, and they are free to attend! While you’re here, consider adding a guided furnace tour to enhance your visit!
