First Friday with Alex Stanilla at Pho Bar & Grill

Free | 6-11:59 p.m., Friday, March 6 | 103 W. Main St., Annville

Genres and conventional approaches to songwriting are a thing of the past, a dying art. While this may be the bane and disapproval of many modern music listeners’ experience, an artist like Alex Stanilla uses this approach as inspiration. Stanilla’s music seems to be the result of the internet age and having access to a number of different forms of media at anytime. Stanilla’s songs are equal parts alternative rock, electro-pop, hip hop, electronic, and jazz with an assorted number of glitches, synth howls, and shouted vocals making their way through the sonic landscape of his songs.

Stanilla’s latest album, Qualia, has been described as the lovechild of “The Beach Boys and Bastille,” and he’s described it as an “impression.” “It’s like making an experimental film, very little thought to how things should transpire, but just going to the strangest places possible.” Stanilla already has another E.P. and a full-length ready to be released in the coming months and sees this time in his life as a “musical purge.” For anyone who likes their pop music homemade and created with a great deal of heart and intention, Stanilla’s music is highly recommended.

The Science of Stuff, Gretna Theatre’s newest educational production, is touring schools and libraries across Lebanon County this month and next to help kids “explore the building blocks of the universe through comedy and movement.”

Additional performances will be presented for students at participating elementary schools throughout the region.

“It’s a playful, educational show framed as a morning talk program,” spokeswoman Grayce Carson said.

“Framed as a wacky morning talk show, The Science of Stuff invites audiences to tune in to The Morning Mishmash with Chad and Nina, where surprise guests help uncover the building blocks of the universe,” the press release stated. “Can you un-bake a cake? Should you build a house out of gumdrops? Featuring commercials, dancing atoms, and plenty of laughs, this interactive performance explores concepts like matter, melting points, and construction in a way that’s accessible and entertaining for all ages.”

The production is part of Gretna Theatre’s Outreach Program, which reaches thousands of students each year, bringing professional theater directly into classrooms and community spaces while reinforcing STEM concepts, creative thinking, and collaborative learning. Sgraffito Redware Plate with Susan Horst at Isaac Meier Homestead

$30.00 – $50.00 | 2-4 p.m., Saturday, March 7 | 525 S. College St., Myerstown

Redware pottery is considered the first pottery made in the American colonies, and local production of redware in the Americas likely began in the 17th century. Redware was made from red clay that was common in most areas. The Pennsylvania Dutch used a variety of decorating techniques, including:

– Goose quills: Colorful slip was dipped into goose quills to form designs, names, dates, and sayings.

– Sgraffito: A sharp-edged wooden tool was used to scratch a design into semi-wet clay.

Learn how to make and decorate a redware plate with our wonderful instructor, Susan Horst from Huber Haus Pottery. The Sgraffito redware class costs $50.00 for an 11″ plate or $30.00 for a 7-7 1/2″ plate. Please bring an apron and a towel. Patterns are provided, or you can bring your own.

Live Music with Six Bar Break at Fredericksburg Eagle Hotel

Free | 6-11:59 p.m., Saturday, March 7 | 101 E. Main St., Fredericksburg

Six Bar Break is a full-throttle roots rock trio homed in Harrisburg, PA. Helmed by the group’s primary songwriter, Ben Bollinger, they’ve been spreading the word about the band throughout the mid-Atlantic and picking up new fans everywhere they go.

Their style and sound take a little bit of inspiration from yesterday and today, describing it as a modern fusion of roots, rock, and blues, but still uniquely original. They’re constantly driven to create something of their own — something built on the solos, riffs, and beats, glued together with a vocal begging to be heard, and a story ready to be told.

The band independently released their first EP in September 2016, “Echo Seven Nine,” and just completed production on their 2017 release, “Broken Road,” with Fred Pellegrini and Progressive Studios. Anytime they’re not on tour, you can find them streaming live to fans on YouTube and Periscope, releasing new videos, staying in the top 10 on the Reverbnation charts, and working on the next big thing.

Cornwall Iron Furnace will celebrate Pennsylvania’s Birthday on Sunday, March 8, by offering free guided tours of the historic site from noon to 4 p.m.

Formerly known as Charter Day, Pennsylvania’s Birthday is recognized by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as a time to commemorate the royal charter granted to William Penn by King Charles II of England more than four centuries ago. The land was granted in repayment of a debt owed to Penn’s father and provided Penn with the opportunity to establish his famous “Holy Experiment” — a colony founded on principles of religious freedom and tolerance — laying the groundwork for what would become the Keystone State. Historic sites across Pennsylvania operated by the Commission will also observe the day with free tours and special activities. Visitors are encouraged to check individual site websites for specific details.

At Cornwall Iron Furnace, trained guides will be stationed throughout the historic buildings to share stories of the Furnace’s operations, workers, and museum collections. Guests are encouraged to dress warmly, as the buildings can be quite chilly this time of year.

Hope for Hurting Parents at North Cornwall Commons

Free | 2-3 p.m., Sunday, March 8 | 410 Springwood Dr., Lebanon

Hope for Hurting Parents was started by Tom and Dena Yohe in 2011, based on their own 10-year journey with their daughter, Renee, who struggled with mental health issues, addiction, and self-injury. They continue to lead free Zoom meetings monthly and send out inspirational emails weekly. They encourage people to start small in-person groups in their own community, which Joe Duke did three years ago. People seem to find comfort and strength in meeting with others who have gone through similar situations. At support group meetings, we discuss one of 22 topics as outlined in Yohe’s workbook, such as self-care, enabling, worry, anxiety, hope, and guarding your family. The workbook also includes prayers, exercises, websites, and other resources. Support group sessions are free and open to anyone who is a parent, caregiver, or loved one with someone who struggles with mental health issues, estrangement, addictions, gender dysphoria, incarceration, homelessness, or any other problem that causes you to experience emotional and spiritual turmoil. Our mission is to give comfort, encouragement, and hope to hurting parents/caregivers on their journey from surviving to thriving.
