Iron Furnaces During the Confederate Invasion of Pennsylvania, 1863 at Cornwall Iron Furnace

Free | 1:30-2 p.m., Sunday, March 22 | 94 Rexmont Road, Cornwall

In June 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee led his Army of Northern Virginia on its boldest campaign of the Civil War: an invasion of Pennsylvania that would end at the Battle of Gettysburg. As Confederate troops moved north, fear spread quickly across the Commonwealth. That fear was especially strong in southcentral Pennsylvania, where the iron industry was one of the region’s most valuable resources. Iron furnaces were critical to the Union war effort, producing materials needed for weapons, ammunition, railroads, and equipment. If captured or destroyed, these operations would deal a serious blow to the North. This presentation explores the panic felt by local ironmasters whose furnaces lay directly in the path of the Confederate advance. It will examine how operations like Cornwall Furnace prepared for the possibility of seizure or destruction, and how others, including Caledonia Furnace, were not as fortunate and suffered the consequences of the Confederate invasion.

Our presenter, Jack McClain, is a Historic Tour Guide at the Cornwall Iron Furnace Museum and a Board Member of the Friends of Old Annville Historical Society. His passion for history began in middle school and has shaped both his personal and academic life. In 2024, he graduated summa cum laude from Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Outside the classroom and museum, Jack has been involved in living history for over 10 years as a Civil War reenactor. He also shares his enthusiasm for the past as an independent historical content creator on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch.

Join us at Cornwall Iron Furnace on Sunday afternoons this March for bite-sized history lessons on a variety of engaging topics. These mini lectures are condensed versions of our popular monthly educational programs and are presented in the Museum Visitor Center by knowledgeable local historians. This short-and-sweet format offers an accessible introduction to the fascinating influence of our industrial heritage. Free to attend! While you’re here, consider adding a guided furnace tour to enhance your visit!

Hope for Hurting Parents at Peer Focus

Free | 2-3 p.m., Sunday, March 22 | 410 Springwood Dr., Lebanon

It was started by Tom and Dena Yohe in 2011, based on their own 10-year journey with their daughter, Renee, who struggled with mental health issues, addiction, and self-injury. They continue to lead free Zoom meetings monthly and send out inspirational emails weekly. They encourage people to start small in-person groups in their own community, which Joe Duke did three years ago. People seem to find comfort and strength in meeting with others who have gone through similar situations. At our support group meetings, we discuss one of 22 topics as outlined in Yohe’s workbook, such as self-care, enabling, worry and anxiety, hope, and guarding your family. The workbook also includes prayers, exercises, websites, and other resources. Support group sessions are free and open to anyone who is a parent, caregiver, or loved one of someone who struggles with mental health issues, estrangement, addictions, gender dysphoria, incarceration, homelessness, or any other problem that causes you to experience emotional and spiritual turmoil. Our mission is to give comfort, encouragement, and hope to hurting parents/caregivers on their journey from surviving to thriving.

The Umbrella Walk in Memory of Lt. William D. Lebo. at Optimist Memorial Park

Free | 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 31 | 1400 Elder St., Lebanon

Join the Lebanon City Police Department and its community to walk and honor Lt. William Lebo during its annual “Umbrella Walk.” The Umbrella Walk is not just a tribute to him but also a celebration of the police profession and all who take the oath to serve and protect. Join the police department as it walks in remembrance, respect, and gratitude.

The walk from Optimist Memorial Park to the police station replicated the walk taken for more than 40 years by Lt. William Lebo. Lebanon Police Chief Bret Fisher created the Umbrella Walk to honor Lebo’s unique tradition of walking to work every day with an umbrella, just in case it rained.

All proceeds benefit scholarships and projects aimed at strengthening the Lebanon community. Why the umbrella? Rain or shine, Lt. Lebo walked to work every day, carrying the same green and white golf umbrella—one placed by the back door at home, another at the police station. It was more than just shelter from the elements; it was a symbol of his dedication, preparation, and quiet reflection. Those umbrellas remain by the doors today… just in case. Lt. Lebo dedicated 40 years to the City of Lebanon, serving with honor, love, and devotion.

Umbrellas will be available for sale. Compact are $25.00, and golf umbrellas are $40.00.
