The North Cornwall Township Board of Supervisors on Tuesday directed township engineer Steve Sherk to advance a potential truck length restriction at the intersection of West Cumberland and Chestnut streets.
Chestnut Street turning exhibit
Sherk explained that larger trucks turning right from Chestnut Street onto West Cumberland often have trouble making the turn. This causes frequent damage to a stop sign at the intersection, which costs at least $150 per instance to the township.
Sherk said school buses and 30-foot box trucks can reasonably make the turn, though the box trucks may need to veer partially into the left lane to complete it. He said the danger increases for 40-foot trucks, which must maneuver into the turn lane and possibly into opposing traffic on U.S. Route 422 to avoid shortcutting the turn.
Supervisors directed Sherk to continue working on a truck length restriction for Chestnut Street from Ridge View to Route 422 for any truck 40 feet or longer.
