Open Fire Dyeing with Natural Dyes with Margi Wright at Isaac Meier Homestead

$35.00 | 12-2 p.m., Saturday, April 11 | 525 S. College St., Myerstown

Imagine a time when everything you owned, from undergarments to table linens, had to be handmade. There were no shops to buy your clothes from. Animals and plants, sheep wool and flax specifically, were most commonly used during this time to make these items.

This class is the fourth in our Sheepy Series, where you will learn this age-old process from start to finish. Learn how to clean fleece, prepare it for spinning, spin it on a drop spindle first, and then spin it on a spinning wheel. Learn how to dye this beautiful fiber using natural dyes over an open fire. With these dyed fibers, you can learn to warp a loom and weave items. Experience the sense of pride, accomplishment, and the tugging of the past by joining us in this endeavour.

Here’s what you can expect: You will dye two skeins of prepared and spun fiber, as well as learn the different plants and insects that can be used to create dyes. Each student will go home with two skeins of local PA-milled yarn. Space is extremely limited, so please sign up early. Send Isaac Meier Homestead a message to register! Tickets cost $35.00 per person. Additional skeins for dyeing may be purchased on the day of class for $15.00 each.

Hope for Hurting Parents was started by Tom and Dena Yohe in 2011, based on their own 10-year journey with their daughter, Renee, who struggled with mental health issues, addiction, and self-injury. They continue to lead free Zoom meetings monthly and send out inspirational emails weekly. They encourage people to start small in-person groups in their own community, which Joe Duke did three years ago. People seem to find comfort and strength in meeting with others who have gone through similar situations. At support group meetings, we discuss one of 22 topics as outlined in Yohe’s workbook, such as self-care, enabling, worry, anxiety, hope, and guarding your family. The workbook also includes prayers, exercises, websites, and other resources. Support group sessions are free and open to anyone who is a parent, caregiver, or loved one of someone who struggles with mental health issues, estrangement, addictions, gender dysphoria, incarceration, homelessness, or any other problem that causes you to experience emotional and spiritual turmoil. Our mission is to give comfort, encouragement, and hope to hurting parents/caregivers on their journey from surviving to thriving.

These performances include working on Broadway, The West End, and with acclaimed artists such as Vanessa Williams, Dee Snyder, Audra McDonald, James Taylor, Pink Martini, Pinchas Zukerman, André Previn, Renee Fleming, The NY Rangers house band, Marilyn Maye, The Manhattan Transfer, Paul McCartney, and many, many others. The gentlemen have also performed with major symphony orchestras and at festivals around the globe.
