Arlene Evelyn Kowal (nee Getz), 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Dec. 13, 2020, at Rest Haven York, PA.

She was born Apr. 13, 1926, in Ono, PA, to the late Raymond and Florence (nee Miller) Getz and was a 1943 graduate of Lebanon High School. Although born on a farm, Arlene would be quick to tell you she was not meant to be a farm girl. She spent most of her life living in the city and suburbs, including Lebanon, PA; Darby, PA; and New Cumberland, PA. She worked as a waitress at the Pushnick’s Diner, Treadway Inn, and Quality Inn, of Lebanon, for many years.  Arlene was a member of Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church in Etters, PA. Arlene’s favorite past times were getting her nose into a good book or movie, crossword puzzles, crocheting, relaxing at the South Jersey shore, and spending time with and caring for her family. She had a tough, no-nonsense exterior but a soft, generous soul. Heaven gained a beautiful, strong angel.

She is preceded in death by her husband, John Kowal, son, Paul Kowal, daughter, Linda Engle, and brothers, Robert Getz and Harold (Sonny) Getz. She is survived by three daughters, Sandra Bowker (Carl), of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; Brenda Vandett (Harry), of Lebanon, PA; and Paula Armes (Aaron), of New Cumberland, PA; a son, Robert Miller (Susan), of Davenport, FL; 17 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Limited visitation will be held at Thompson Funeral home on Monday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. followed by graveside services at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Lebanon, PA at 11 a.m., with Pastor Jenny Thomas of Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church officiating.
