Arne M. Reistad Jr., of Mount Gretna, passed away on Sept. 27, 2024, in the Hershey Medical Center, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Philadelphia on July 27, 1948, to the late Arne M. Reistad Sr. and Mary (Gallagher) Reistad, Arne was a 1966 graduate of Father Judge High School in Philadelphia. He attended Temple University until enlisting in the United States Navy in 1969. Arne served in Vietnam and left active duty in 1974.
Arne began civilian life as a project manager in many capacities, from Gino’s Restaurants, Mrs. Paul’s Kitchens, Crown Cork & Seal, until he began working for the Hershey Company, building and decommissioning candy plants throughout the world. Arne retired from Hershey in 2001 and began working with Schaeffer Construction Management refurbishing apartment complexes. This endeavor gave him the opportunity to live aboard his sailboat, Catherine, and enjoy his time on the water. Arne loved to share his knowledge of sailing and boats by teaching others to sail and even taught a course on how to buy a boat. Arne found his retirement calling at the Annapolis Sailyard using his love of boating to broker boats until his passing.
Arne was active in Boy Scouts of America since childhood, obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout and a member of Order of the Arrow. He continued service to the Boy Scouts of America at the troop level with Troop 26 in Campbelltown and Troop 456 in Palmyra, also at the council, district, and national levels. Arne was a mentor and leader to many adult leaders through scouting’s Woodbadge program, NEIV 121-X, held a special place in his heart.
When not on the water or at scout camp, Arne loved flyfishing, traveling, playing solitaire on his phone or civilization on the Xbox, and spending time with family. Arne was a member of Mount Gretna United Methodist Church.
Arne was predeceased by his brother in scouting, Charles Reiner, and his wife, Celia.
Arne is survived by his wife, Christi; sons, Arne Reistad III, Holden Kernan (fiancée Carley), James Painter (wife Tiffany), David Kreider (wife Carol), and Thomas Kreider (wife Barbara); daughters, Caitlin Boger and Anna Shanaman (husband Tyler); grandchildren, Liliana Harrison, Natalina Harrison, Grayson Painter, Adalynn Painter, Ashley Kreider, Megan Kreider, Katie Kreider, Kelsey Kreider, Kristin Kreider, Mary Kreider, Rilee Knable, Gracelynn Boger, Brinley Shanaman, and Brant Shanaman; aunt, Edith Thrasher; brother in scouting, Jim Healy (wife Peg); sister-in-law, Monica Beasley (husband John); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.
