Barbara Ann Chapman Dunkley, a 42-year resident of Bahama, NC, who most recently resided in Lebanon, PA, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2023, at the age of 80.
Barbara grew up in Mocksville, NC, the daughter of the late Charles Craig Chapman and Mary Larkin Chapman.
Barbara earned a degree in education from Appalachian State University and became a public school teacher, a profession she dearly loved. She served as a teacher in NC public schools for nearly 35 years, retiring in the early 2000s. She spent many years teaching her favorite subject, advanced placement American history, at Northern High School in Durham. During her time there, she had a positive impact on thousands of students and very much enjoyed working with young people.
In 1968, Barbara married Malcolm “Mac” Dunkley from Person County, NC. She and Mac spent 33 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death in 2001.
She is survived by a loving extended family, including her son, Craig Dunkley, Kathryn Dunkley (daughter-in-law), son, Scott Dunkley, Dori Dunkley (daughter-in-law); five grandchildren, Reagan, Brooke, Liana, Zachary, and Renee; and a host of other relatives who will miss her greatly.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Bahama, with Rev. Eric Prenshaw and Rev. Dr. Bill Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall.
