Betty J. Swope Matthews, 95, of Cornwall, and formerly of Fredericksburg, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital. She was the wife of the late Paul Swope, Jr., and George T. Matthews.

Born in Fredericksburg, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mabel Meyer Dieffenbach.

Betty retired from the Penn National Racetrack after serving 17 years as the switchboard operator. She was a member of the St. Paul’s of Hamlin United Church of Christ and the Order of the Eastern Star Lebanon Chapter #115.

She is survived by her sons Barry P. Swope of Lebanon and Randy L. husband of Andrea Swope of Mt. Gretna; grandchildren Angela (Sam) Crawford of Huntersville, NC, Brent (Allyson) Swope of Lebanon, and Jeremiah (Holly) Swope of Ringtown; and great-grandchildren Colin & Alexa Maclamroc, Caroline Crawford, and Addison, Elijah, & Jonas Swope.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the St. Paul’s of Hamlin United Church of Christ, 2351 Mt. Zion Rd., Fredericksburg, PA 17026. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Hamlin Cemetery.
