Donald J. Shartle, 85, of Bernville, died on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at the St. Joseph Medical Center, Reading. He was the husband of Janet M. (Page) Shartle, who died May 3, 2017.
Born in Womelsdorf, PA on Aug. 9, 1936, he was a son of the late Adam George and Corine Rebecca (Himmelberger) Shartle.
A graduate of Womelsdorf High School, Donald served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was employed as an assembler at Rockwell International/Arrow for 40 years. Donald was a lifetime member of the Tulpehocken Historical Society, a member of the Shartlesville Rod and Gun Club, and a member of the Bernville Grange, as he enjoyed helping those in the community.
He was also a terrific father, grandfather, and mentor to his grandchildren. Donald enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete in horse shows. He also enjoyed working on his cars, riding his sports car, outdoor sports, hunting trips with his son and cousins, fishing with his grandchildren, and trapping. In addition, he enjoyed telling jokes, cooking, gardening, especially caring for his petunias, and vacationing with his wife, who was the love of his life and cherished dearly.
Donald Shartle was a joy to be around. He always found loving ways to provide support and comfort for those around him in any situation.
He is survived by a daughter, Wendy Shartle, of Bernville; son, Todd Shartle, of Pine Grove; grandchildren, Kiara, Isaiah, Malachi, and Ethan; and a sister, Lou J. Leininger, of Pottsville.
A Celebration of Life for Donald and Janet will be held on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Aetna Bible Church, 11 N. Chestnut St., Mt. Aetna, preceded by a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family.
