Elmer S. Hoover, 85, of the Lincoln Christian Home in Ephrata and formerly of Weavertown Road in Myerstown, passed away on July 23, 2024, at the Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Anna Mary (Kurtz) Hoover. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on April 2.
Born in Lancaster on May 19, 1939, he was the son of the late Joseph O. and Mary (Sensenig) Hoover.
In the later years of his life, Elmer struggled with Parkinson’s disease, which gradually affected his balance. Elmer took a fall, causing a fatal head injury. Elmer spent most of his life on the farm and was a skilled mechanic. After the children left home, he and Anna Mary spent several very fulfilling years in mission work at the Bald Eagle Boys Camp and the 6th St. Mission in Philadelphia. He was known as a hard worker and for his quick wit. He had a deep faith in the Lord and was very committed to his church family at Sharon Mennonite Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Elmer Scott, husband of Sandra (Garman) Hoover, of Wagener, SC, Jerald Lee, husband of JoAnna (Young) Hoover, of Aiken, SC, and Joseph Nelson, husband of Karin (Wagler) Hoover, of Canon City, CO; daughters, Doris Arlene, wife of J. Michael Musselman, of Waymart, and Elaine Kurtz Hoover, of Dublin, OH; sisters, Anna, wife of the late Martin Weber, of Atmore, AL, Alma, wife of the late Irvin Eberly, of Coatesville, and Thelma, wife of Dan Wenger, of Lititz; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Willis, and his wife, Mary, Allan, and his wife, Alta, and Paul, and his wife, Ruth Hoover.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. at the Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home & Crematory, Jonestown. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Sharon Mennonite Church. Interment will follow at the Wolf’s Union Meeting House Cemetery.
