Hetty Thomas Wetzel Wengert, 84, of Myerstown, died on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021, at the WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon. She was the wife of Kenneth W. Wengert, Sr., who died on May 12, 2011.
Born in Felinfoel, South Wales, she immigrated to the United States in 1947 together with her mother, Eleanor Gravel Thomas Wetzel, and her husband, Ralph J. Wetzel. Hetty’s father, Thomas John Thomas, was killed in North Africa during WWII, where he was a member of the British Army. Hetty moved to Lebanon County in 1952 and married Kenneth W. Wengert in June 1956, making their home in Jackson Twp. She was a 1954 graduate of Lebanon High School and worked as an office manager at the Grand View Memorial Park in Annville for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She then opened her own quilt business and worked with the local Amish community for several years. She was an active member of Myerstown UCC and many other crafting organizations.
Her love for travel was well-known with her participation in Friendship Force International, where she held true to their motto of making new friends around the world. Her extensive travels brought her to faraway places, and the more exotic the places, the more she enjoyed them. She also enjoyed having her newfound friends visit her in her home in Myerstown. She considered the friendships she shared both here and abroad, her true treasures of life and considered this a great part of her legacy.
She is survived by a daughter, Cathy L., a son, Ken, Jr., and his wife, Carol, grandchildren, Amy, and her husband, Steve, Kelly, and her husband, Erin, Andrew, Bryan, and his wife, Jenny, and Alyson, and great-grandchildren, Ella Grace and Michael Gensemer, and Aubrey and Parker Greininger. She was preceded in death by her firstborn grandson, Christopher M. Leininger.
Hetty has requested a private service. Anyone desiring to memorialize her memory may contribute to the endowment fund of Myerstown UCC, 304 W. Main Ave., Myerstown, PA 17067.
