Joan M. Moyer, 95, Malvern, PA, formerly of Lebanon, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Chester County Hospital. She was the wife of the late Horace F. Moyer, who passed away in 2016.
Joan was born in Lebanon on March 6, 1926, to the late Herman W. and Clara U. (Felty) Spangler. She was a graduate of Lebanon High School and Millersville University in Education and Library Science as class Salutatorian.
Joan began her career as a general and medical librarian at the Lebanon VA Hospital. She transitioned to the school library in the Annville-Cleona School District. She served 30 years as junior/senior high school librarian which included training library aides and advising Library Club. Joan dedicated herself to providing up-to-date collections, a highly responsive service level to students, faculty, and even alums at times, as well as exemplary leadership to student teachers and staff under her wing.
Joan was a member of St. Mark’s UCC in Lebanon and the former Valley Beach Club with her husband. Upon retirement, she volunteered at the Lebanon County Historical Society and participated in Millersville Alumni and Annville-Cleona retiree events. She and her husband shared enjoyment of music, concerts, plays, films, museums, tennis, swimming, volleyball, shuffleboard, and good food. They often incorporated these in active vacations. Patronizing theater and concert organizations in and beyond the Lebanon area were also part of their shared lives.
On her own, walking, gardening, interior decorating, antiquing, colonial history, fashion, education, and environmental issues, and reading were major activities. Joan also kept a connection with school and sports events, especially through her husband, son, and grandchildren. She focused much love and care for her husband in his late years of health challenges.
Surviving is a son, Randall R., and his wife, Sallie G., Moyer, of Malvern, PA, as well as grandchildren Matthew, Sara, Caroline, and Alec.
A brother, Richard H. Spangler, and a sister, Betty M. Spangler, predeceased Joan.
