John A. Young, 93, of Annville, PA died Monday, May 25, 2020 in Wellspan Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, PA.
Born July 6, 1926 in Boston Heights, Ohio, he was a son of the late Anton and Deta (Louis) Young formerly of The Netherlands. He was baptized, confirmed and married to Gladys Pomper in the First Evangelical & Reformed Church (United Church of Christ), Akron, Ohio. He was a member of St. John’s (Hain’s) UCC, Wernersville, PA and Christ Church UCC, Annville, PA. He also attended Hershey Evangelical Free Church in Hershey, PA and Living Waters Chapel in Lebanon, PA.
He was a graduate of Goodyear Industrial University, Akron, Ohio, served in the US Navy during World War II aboard an LST in the Pacific, and a graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio with a degree in Business Administration. In college he was Vice-President of the Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity and President of the Delta Sigma Pi business honorary fraternity.
He was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio as a Pattern Maker for 8 years; the Glidden Co. in Reading, PA as an Industrial Sales Representative for 10 years; and the United Church of Christ Homes for 26 years in the development and management of three retirement communities: The Lebanon Valley Home, Annville, PA; Thornwald Home, Carlisle, PA; Ephrata Manor, Ephrata, PA and retired as the Executive Director in 1988.
As a PA licensed Nursing Home Administrator he served on the Board of Directors and was Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging; the House of Delegates of the American Association of Homes for The Aging; the Council for Health & Human Services Ministries of United Church of Christ; and was President of the American Protestant Hospital Association.
He with his family was a member of the Reading Camping Club, Reading, PA since 1960 and enjoyed many camping experiences. He also enjoyed fishing trips with his sons and traveling throughout USA with a travel trailer. Following retirement he spent the winter months camping and visiting relatives in Florida.
Surviving is his wife of 68 years Gladys S. (Pomper) Young; three sons, Gregory A. Young (Norma Shenk), Jonestown, Roger A. Young, a missionary in Russia; David A. Young, (Robin Palmer), Wilmot, NH; one daughter, Suellen K. Young, at home; five grandchildren, Amy (Young) Fuhrman, Alan, Matthew, Amber (Young) Andrews, Sarah Young; 8 great grandchildren, one
sister, Betty Zimmerman, Akron, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Clasina Borden.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, May 31, 2020 from 4-6 PM at Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, 618 E. Main Street, Annville. Funeral Services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
