John Richard Allwein, affectionately known as “Chub” during his high school days, passed peacefully on July 30, 2025, at the age of 86.

Born on July 24, 1939, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary (Arnold) Allwein; children, Gregory Allwein, married to Shannon Ream, Anthony Allwein, married to Stevie Falk, and Jennifer Fink, married to Michael Fink; and grandchildren, Luke, Ellie, John “Jack,” Adam, Nate, and Emma.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Allwein; beloved son, Thomas Allwein; and sister, Luanne Allwein Shaak. He is also survived by his sister, Janice Allwein Raynes, wife of Bill Raynes.

John spent over 30 years working at Lebanon Valley Offset, where he was admired for his dedication and loyalty. In 1985, with a characteristic mix of charm and humor, he convinced Mary to purchase the Fenwick Tavern — claiming, mostly in jest, that it was for the free beer. A loyal Catholic and a man of unwavering faith, John lived his values with quiet strength. He was also a formidable poker player, known for his sharp mind and uncanny intuition — always knowing exactly when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em.

John will be remembered for his deep love of family, quick wit, and the joy he brought to everyone lucky enough to know him. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well played. The family would like to thank the staff at Cedar Haven — especially Kelly, Vanessa, Alea, Aryanna, Malyssa, Jessica, and Louie — for their compassionate and loving care.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, at St. Cecilia’s Church, 120 E. Lehman St., Lebanon, PA 17046. A visitation will be held prior to Mass from 11 a.m. to noon at the church. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s name may be made to St. Cecilia’s Church at the above address. Thompson Funeral Home Inc. is entrusted with the arrangements. Please share your memories with the family at Thompson Funeral Home’s online guest book at thompsonfuneralhomelebanon.com.
