June Lorraine Hey, 89, of Lancaster, PA passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on May 15, 2022, surrounded by the love of her family. June was the faithful wife of Albert E. Hey III for 61 years of marriage and the loving mother of her three children, Lloyd Hey, Kenneth Hey, and Kristen Hey O’Kelly.
June was born June 22, 1932, and grew up in Little Neck, New York.
June was the youngest of six children, four brothers, and one sister. June graduated from Norwegian Lutheran Deaconess Nursing School in Brooklyn, NY to pursue her dream of serving others as a nurse. At age 22, she started her nursing career at North Shore Hospital. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University and later a master’s degree in counseling from C.W. Post College. Throughout her career, June worked in various areas of nursing including visiting nursing, providing allergy testing and shots, and working as a school nurse teacher at the high school and elementary school levels. June found joy in helping others, and she felt blessed to care for so many people throughout her career.
June was grateful for the love of her family. She met her life-long husband of 61 years, Albert Edwards Hey, III, in a church youth group, called Luther League, while in high school. June and Al enjoyed working on service projects in this youth group including Habitat for Humanity. She and Al married on October 8, 1955, and settled in Oyster Bay, Long Island. They shared a love for boating. Some of June’s happiest memories were cruising on their boat, Heyday, on Long Island Sound with her family. She appreciated the beauty of sunrises and sunsets on the water. June enjoyed playing Rummikub and later started a Rummikub group at her retirement community that continues to meet each week. Traveling was an interest she shared with Al, especially vacationing on St. Thomas. Additionally, June had a love of Norwegian cooking including making Fattigmann cookies at Christmas time and Norwegian meatballs. June’s mother was born in Norway and her father was born in Sweden. Therefore, June had a heartfelt connection to her Scandinavian heritage.
Faith was a strong foundation of June’s life. She demonstrated her faith by teaching and modeling it throughout her lifetime. She and Al taught their children and grandchildren from an early age the importance of prayer and faith as a foundation for their own lives. This faith created strong family values that have lasted for generations. June reflected with gratitude for her Aunt Martha who taught her how to pray. In her final days, June reflected on how she had been blessed and how her family will always be in her heart. She shared what fun we’ve had as a family, how much she loved each one, and added, “That’s what God wants us to do, to love each other.”
June is survived by her children Lloyd Hey husband of Lori Brooks Hey, Kenneth Hey husband of Julie Walker Hey, and Kristen Hey O’Kelly. She is also survived by her grandchildren Katherine O’Kelly, David Hey, Sarah Hey, Thomas O’Kelly, Kenneth O’Kelly, Alden Hey, Keaton Hey, Annalise Gazda, Jason Gazda, and Marcus Gazda.
A memorial service to honor June’s life will be held on Tuesday, May 31, at 11:45 a.m. at Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home, 5 Camp Meeting Rd., Jonestown, PA 17038. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Al, at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, PA, with Rev. Dr. Richard Reifsnyder officiating, as he did for Al five years earlier.
