Philip Francis Mohn, 98, of Jonestown, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at Spang Crest, Lebanon. He was the widower of Dorothy R. (Irwin) Mohn, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
Born in Jonestown on Sept. 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Leroy and Irene (Gerberich) Mohn.
Philip was a 1944 graduate of the former Jonestown High School. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy during WWII and walked through Hiroshima months after the atomic bomb was dropped.
After returning from his service in the Navy, he attended electronics/radio school in Harrisburg. He started radio sales and repair at his father’s store, Mohn’s Hardware in Jonestown, in the late 1940s. In the early 1960s, he moved across Market Street, and he opened Mohn’s TV and Appliance Store, which was relocated back to the hardware store location and remained the owner/operator until he retired in the late 1990s.
He was a lifelong member and former council member of Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jonestown. He was a member of the Jonestown American Legion and was a life member of the Perseverance Fire Company, where he started volunteer service at the age of 16. He served as Chief Engineer for 25 years and was an active volunteer firefighter for 69 years. He also served many decades on the Fire Co. Board of Directors. Philip was well-known as the “candyman” at the Perseverance Fire Co. Social Club, where he would regularly hand out candy. He was loved by many, especially his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia (James) Hillman, of Lebanon, Judith (Thomas) Blouch, of Annville, Deborah (Donald) Heverling, of Georgetown, Delaware, Andrea (Steven) Ruck, of Jonestown, and Michelle Calvaresi, of Jonestown; son, Thomas (Denyse) Mohn, of Jonestown; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandson; and friend, Arlene Youtz, of Lebanon.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Mohn and Grace Dennis; brother, Donald Mohn; and daughter-in-law, Eleanor “Norie” (Blantz) Mohn.
There will be a viewing on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, from 4-6 p.m., at Kreamer & Lum Funeral Home & Crematory, Jonestown. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 103 E. Market St., Jonestown preceded by a viewing at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Jonestown.
