Richard I. “Dick” Hess, a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully on Feb. 4, 2024.

He was born on Sept. 5, 1926, in Lebanon, to his late parents, Irving L. Hess and Orpha Doughty (Emboden).

Richard will be remembered for his devotion to his family, friends, and country.

He leaves behind his son, John Waters; his grandchildren, Lisa Sweigert (Hess), Richard I. Hess III, Benjamin R. Hess, and Caleb J. Hess; 18 great-grandchildren; his loving sister, Susan Spang, and spouse, Ray; his brother, Larry Doughty, and spouse, Barbara; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian M. Hess nee Heisey; and his siblings, Charles R. Hess, Marian Leedy, Joanne Whisler, and Ned W. Hess.

Having served his country with honor, Richard was a proud veteran of the Army. He served in World War II, in the Panama Canal and Okinawa. Richard’s commitment to community organizations was commendable. He was a lifelong member of the Eagles and VFW Post #23, where he actively contributed to their missions and events.

Funeral services and ceremonies will be held in Richard’s honor. A public viewing will take place on Feb. 12, 2024, from 6-8 p.m., at Christman’s Funeral Home, Inc., 226 Cumberland St., Lebanon. Another public viewing will be held at the same location on Feb. 13, 2024, starting at 11 a.m. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home on Feb. 13, 2024, at 12 p.m. Richard’s final resting place will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, where a graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., also on Feb. 13, 2024.
