Mr. Robert (Bob) W. Sherman, Jr., 88, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, at the ProMedica Manor Care Facility in Lebanon, with his loving family by his side.

Robert was born in Lebanon on Jan. 10, 1933, to the late Robert W. Sherman, Sr. and Mrs. Dorothy D. Sherman-Demler in Lebanon. 

He grew up around friends in Lebanon’s “Independent Borough,” while excelling in sports over the years. Robert played semi-pro football in the coal regions and played minor league baseball for the St. Louis “Chicks,” before entering the Navy in 1952.

He served four years active duty in the Korean War and engaged in eight Naval battles. He was a recipient of decorative honors, including National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Citation – Unit China Service Medal, and Korean – United Nations Service Medal. Robert also served four additional years in the Naval reserve.

While he was in the Navy, Robert married Mary Lou Schneider, with a loving commitment of 66 years of marriage. He worked at the Lebanon Chemical Corporation for 42 years, while pursuing advanced education at Penn State and Slippery Rock Universities. He held positions at the company during this time as chemical analyst, plant engineer, and eventually as director of purchasing. Besides the Navy experience, Robert enjoyed extensive travels after his retirement.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Sherman; children, Abbie Sherman, Robert W. Sherman III; daughter-in-law, Barbara Sherman; and grandchildren, Brittany Sherman, Robert W. Sherman IV, and Jonathan Sherman.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice (Beattie) E. Yeagley-Sherman, of Lebanon.

Services and burial will be held on Thursday, Dec. 16 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Please meet at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.
