Sun Choong Kim, MD, 86, of Palmyra, formerly of Mahanoy City, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, December 20, 2019. He was born in Korea on Saturday, July 1, 1933 to the late Kyu Hwa Kim. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Young Ok (Cho) Kim.
He graduated from Chonnam National University Medical School and was a Captain in the Korean Army serving as a trauma surgeon. He immigrated to Boston in 1971 where he served as an oncology surgeon at Tufts University Medical Center. In 1976 he moved to Schuylkill County were he would serve for several decades in the areas of general surgery and family medicine in Mahanoy City and Frackville. He dedicated his life to his career and serving others. He was a proud grandfather and cherished time spent with his beloved Eloise and Benjamin. He was a loyal friend and enjoyed reading and gardening. Most of all, he was a faithful husband, loving father and grandfather who will be missed dearly.
He is survived by two sons, Sang K. Kim, MD and wife Heather (Keener) of Hummelstown and Michael K. Kim of Bethlehem; a daughter, Susan Kim and husband Brian Perkins of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren, Eloise and Benjamin Kim.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 28th at 11 AM at Rothermel-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078 with Rev. Stephanie Seigh as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Hershey Cemetery, Hershey. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 10 AM until time of the service and for a period of food and fellowship following the committal service in the Celebration Room at the funeral home.
