It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Teddy Wayne Russell, 83, of Lebanon, on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, at Cornwall Manor. He was the husband of Lois Jane (Harp) Russell, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Teddy was born on Feb. 14, 1941, to the late James L. and B. Marion (Sansom) Russell and raised in Brentwood, Maryland. While his father served in the Navy, he lived for some time in Panama, from which he loved to share stories of his adventures. He loved sports, played soccer, and was a proud Georgia Tech yellow jacket. He married his high school sweetheart, Lois, and they raised their family in Glen Mills. Teddy was known throughout the community for his kindness and service, which included being a Bible teacher and leader in the Methodist Youth Fellowship. He also held the position of Thornbury Township Supervisor from 1986-1991. He loved history, reading, and was an avid gardener. He was always seeking his next building and landscaping project, which included restoring an 18th-century home, building many rock walls, and nurturing his many annual and perennial plants while remaining a dedicated fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers.
Teddy will be remembered professionally as a leader and mentor in civil engineering, as he successfully started and grew an environmental and civil engineering firm based in Chadds Ford. In 2000, Teddy retired with his wife to Sunset Beach, North Carolina. He and Lois were active members of Seaside United Methodist Church and generously shared their home with family and friends. Teddy especially loved visits from his grandchildren, where he would find joy in simple trips to the beach, playing golf in their backyard, getting ice cream, or playing many board games. Teddy and Lois also enjoyed traveling, especially to the U.S. National Parks and other national treasures, of course always using a paper map and collecting rocks along the way. Known as Teddy, Dad, Uncle Ted, Pappy, and PopPop, he will be remembered as the most kind, sweet, and big-hearted man who passionately loved his family and gave glory to God for all his blessings. These were attributes that dominated his personality, and which Alzheimer’s Dementia could not take away.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his sister, Donna Jeanne Russell, of Sunset Beach, NC; and four cherished daughters, Susan Armstrong (Jerry), of Peach Bottom, PA, Karen McWilliams (Kevin), of Williamsburg, VA, Sheryl Russell (Michael Hiro), of Kennett Square, PA, and Jennifer Bridenbaugh (Eric), of Flemington, NJ; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Teddy was preceded in death by his siblings, James L. Russell and Lavelle Baldwin.
A memorial service and celebration of Teddy’s life is planned at Cornwall Manor Zerr Chapel on Dec. 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. Enter Cornwall Manor’s Main Gate at 1 Boyd St., Cornwall. The chapel is located on Manor Road on the right-hand side.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Ted’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association (ALZ.org) or Hospice for All Seasons (www.hospiceforallseasons.org/giving.html).
