Walter J. Cass, 89, formerly of Reading and Bethel and most recently of York, PA, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Amoroso Wellness of York, PA.
He was the husband of the late June D. Cass, who passed away on June 24, 2025. They were married on Feb. 14, 1955, and celebrated 70 years of marriage before June’s passing.
Born in Reading on Feb. 4, 1937, he  was a son of the late Walter J. Cass Sr. and Ruth Breidegam Cass. Walter attended Reading High School. Walter retired from Carpenter Steel after 32 years. He also worked as a delivery driver for the New Cornelia Copper Mine Company store in Ajo, AZ.
Walter served as a conscientious objector, with his wife, June, by his side, for two years at Philadelphia Hospital from 1955 to 1957.
Walter was well-known for his expertise and knowledge of meteorites, shark teeth, rocks, minerals, and Native American culture. Not to mention his ability to remember many phrases and quotes of famous actors and actresses, and had an endless, fun-loving joke list which he shared with everyone he knew. He loved hymns and country music by various artists. He enjoyed watching his wife sing and play guitar with her sisters and friends in Ajo, AZ. He also loved the many walks and hikes over the years in Mexico and the Sonoran Desert. Walter worked as a horseback riding guide for Ye Old Copper Town Riding Stables in Ajo, AZ. He will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege to know and love him.
Walter last attended the Millbach Conservative Brethren Church in Newmanstown, PA, in person and online.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Melanie, wife of Arthur Johns, of Paradise, PA; sons, Lauren, husband of Linda Cass, of Glen Rock, and Lee Cass, of Bethel; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Grose Funeral Home Inc., 358 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown, PA 17067. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow services in Bern Cemetery, Leesport, PA.
