Here is an explanation of the enrollment periods.

Annual Enrollment (October 15 – December 7)

Anyone can make changes to their coverage and enroll in a Medicare plan each year from October 15 through December 7. If you are in Original Medicare you can switch to a Medicare Advantage Plan. If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan you can switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan or return to Original Medicare in a Medicare Supplement and add a stand- alone prescription drug plan.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

When you are fist eligible for Medicare you have a seven month Initial Enrollment Period to sign up for Medicare Part A and/or Part B. If you are receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits you will automatically receive Medicare. If you are eligible for Medicare when you turn 65 you can sign up during the seven month period that

  • Begins 3 months before the month you turn 65
  • Includes the month you turn 65
  • Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65

General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31)

Coverage starts July 1 and you may have to pay a higher Part A and Part B.

Special Election Period (SEP)

You can make changes to your Medicare Advantage Plan and Stand- Alone Drug Prescription Drug Plan when certain events happen in your life, like if you move or lose other insurance coverage, qualifying financial events, and special needs. These chances are called Special Election Periods. Rules about when you can change and the types of changes you can make are different for each Special Election Period.
