2020 has been a challenging year for local non-profit organizations. Many organizations have seen an uptick in need, others have experienced low donor engagement, and most have suffered due to cancelled in-person fundraising events. But on September 19, 2020, Palmyra’s Great Give hopes to help non-profit organizations fulfill their missions through a one-day, online giving event aimed at raising funds and awareness for organizations benefiting residents of the Palmyra Area. This is the organization’s second annual event.
“Palmyra’s Great Give was created to build a sense of community for the great groups doing work in Palmyra” says steering committee member Dwight Hein. “We wanted to have a day that would raise money to benefit several organizations and were really encouraged by giving days in surrounding counties where millions are raised in just one day.”
Lancaster’s Extra Give raised an excess of $10 million in their event last November, and Give Local York raised a record $3.5 million in their giving day on May 1. Local organizers of Palmyra’s Great Give are excited about the second year and hopeful that each participating group will raise funds to help much needed organizations support our community. In 2019, Palmyra’s Great Give raised over $22,000 through 224 donors. There were 28,000 visitors to the online giving site that benefited to 40+ organizations.
In addition to raising funds through the generosity of the community, groups can compete for prizes throughout the day. In 2019, more than $2,000 in prize monies were awarded for contests like the donor the most distance away from Palmyra or the gift to the first organization of the day. “We really wanted to create excitement for giving on the day and help groups leverage their social networks. This type of peer-to-peer fundraising can be really effective and help to promote lesser-known groups in our area. We are super proud to say we had more than 28,000 views on our website during last year’s giving event,” says Shila Ulrich, Steering Committee Chair.
